Step 1: Choose the Right Surge Protector

Step 3: Identify the Installation Method

Step 4: Install the SPD

Now it is time to secure the Surge Protective Device (SPD) to your electrical panel. First, find a clear spot on the side of your breaker box. Most SPD units come with a threaded nipple; simply remove one of the circular “knockouts” on the side of the panel, insert the nipple, and tighten the locknut from the inside to secure it firmly. Keep the unit as close to the breaker as possible, as shorter wires are more effective at catching surges.
Next, connect the wires. You will attach the two hot wires to your new double-pole breaker, the white wire to the neutral bus bar (where other white wires gather), and the bare or green wire to the ground bus bar.
